With your donation towards our research, you will directly contribute to our mission of providing biodiversity data and computational models to combat the global biodiversity crisis. This will allow us at the Biodiversity Data Lab to continue producing innovative and cutting-edge biodiversity research, providing high-quality biodiversity data products for Swedish and international policy-makers, government agencies, researchers, international biodiversity reporting purposes, businesses, and the general public. Below you find a selection of specific funding goals that would catalyze our research.

Donation inquiry

1,000 eDNA samples - 500,000 kr

This funding package would provide all necessary consumables and processing costs (incl. DNA sequencing) for 1,000 eDNA sampling kits. This will provide essential training data for our biodiversity models.

Lab assistant (50%) - 600,000 kr (per year)

This package would provide salary + social fees + overhead for employing a 50% full-time laboratory assistant, tasked with sample processing, DNA extraction, and preparation for sequencing. Having a lab-assistant employed is one of the most critical aspects of upscaling eDNA-based biodiversity data collection.

Bench-top DNA sequencer - 1,000,000 kr

Purchasing our own bench-top DNA sequencing machine would considerably decrease costs per eDNA sample and speed up the process of biodiversity data generation. Viable options in this price-range would be the PacBio Vega Benchtop System or the Nanopore PromethION sequencer.

Biodiversity data engineer - 1,200,000 kr (per year)

A biodiversity data engineer employed full-time at the Biodiversity Data Lab would be key to make our research outputs easily accessible via online portals and user-friendly map-services. This will be important for establishing high accessibility of our data-products, leading to easier application of these products through decision-makers, as well as making biodiversity data and expertise openly available and easily interpretable for everyone.

Senior Biodiversity Data Lab Leader (30%) - 5,000,000 kr (covers 10 years)

To ensure the continuation of the strong research and innovation focus of the Biodiversity Data Lab, it will be essential to secure continued funding for the leader of this research group. The proposed package would ensure 10 years of continued funding, allowing for a senior researcher to dedicate 30% full-time to this important task (currently Tobias Andermann). This contribution will be key to maintain the international competitive edge of the research produced by the Biodiversity Data Lab and its representation at conferences, in media, and news articles.
